In certain situations, the right thing to do may be to seek professional help to resolve the mental issues that we are facing. It is only in recent times that mental health has become something to be taken seriously, just like any other illneses like diabetes or cancer. And this is very timely as stress (which may lead to depression) can be a major cause of other ailments and in some extreme cases, lead to suicidal thoughts.

Obviously, it is ideal that the problem is a small enough to resolve by talking amongst yourselves and thru prayers. But if the situation persist after multiple attempts, or there seems to be no headway due to lack of knowledge or experience on how to move forward, then professional help may be the required next step. At the very least, go seek out an alternate opinion – most professionals do offer a initial pre-consultation at a low cost (some will even offer this for free) to explore if this is something worthwhile to consider.
I once had a conversation with a church pastor who happens to have a professional (Master’s) degree in counselling. He commented that there is a stigma among church-goers to seek out counsellors for help, as they were told to rely 100% on God and that everything can be resolved just thru prayer and fasting. That is the reason he chose to pursue his qualification so that he can offer his services on top of leading his flock. I wish more pastors (or church leaders) will follow his lead because there is a clear lack of expertise in this area.
Some situation in which professional help is required (list is NOT exhaustive):
- Major life changes – diagnosis of terminal illness, divorce, job loss
- Substance abuse – drugs, alcohol
- Significant behavioral changes – withdrawal from daily activities, changes in sleep/eating patterns
- Severe trauma – sexual/physical abuse, serious vehicle accidents, war experience, unexpected death of loved one, natural disasters, arson/fire
Life is not easy but it is said that time heals all things and that “these too shall pass”. The main thing is that we need to ensure that we remain alive until they pass…and they will.
